Biography / CV of Mike Janes

MikesJanes`s career path has taken many twists and turns all of which very different form his now chosen profession. He began boxing from the age of 8 making it to amateur level by his teens. Encouraged by his Father he continued for many years until he swapped his gloves for a ball. He played semi-professional rugby as well as working full time as a builder.

Although Mike Janes always practised his art of sculpting he worked in solitary and without promotion of r a number of years. It was not until his mid 40`s he gave up work, completed his BA Hons at Bristol University and decided sculpting, his life long passion, was to take precedents. Utilizing materials taken from the building trade, such a concrete, bitumen, tarmac, render, plaster, paint, clay and stone he creates the most amazing sculptures. Through colour and texture, he explores scientific and philosphical interpretations in an abstract form.

Artist Statement of Mike Janes

Mike Janes`s Personal Statement
I am directed by the challenge of creating vibration and movement in a static medium, and the work reflects the concept of manual work as a sub-conscious art-making. Through colour, texture and the use of traditional building materials, I explore some of these scientific and philosophical interpretations in an abstract form.

I believe in vision and process. I render ideas through the tactile embrace of materials such as concrete, bitumen, tarmac, render, plaster, paint, clay and stone. The materials speak for themselves and the works are resolved through a process of addition and subtraction. The result is often a transformed silhouette of a flat image into a three-dimensional statement.

The essence of my work is simplicity simplicity of line and curvilinear form, the simplicity of perceived fluid working motions.
